The committee will be holding a meeting in September to plan how the money raised during last year will be spent to support local Diabetes services. If you have ideas that you would like to
contribute, please write a letter or email us (details on the contact page) and we will ensure that these are taken into account in the decision-making process.

Community Provider Unit - Diabetes Service

Diabetes Care in Bromley...

Margaret and Jerry attended the launch on Thursday 14th May. Diabetes patients in the borough will experience easier access to services and an improved standard of care, closer to their home. The Diabetes Service will now be managed by the Community Provider
Unit of Bromley Primary Care trust working with GPs to provide a new
approach to managing the condition. The main Diabetes Centre will remain at Orpington Hospital with an additional
‘mini’ Diabetes Centre opening at Beckenham Beacon. The aim is to
improve patient’s knowledge and understanding of their condition, improve their standard of care and avoid hospital admission, as well as making better use of the resources available in Bromley.
This service will be led by Dr Donatella Casiglia, community based Consultant Diabetologist supported by healthcare professionals including GPs, specialist nurses and dieticians etc.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions. Worldwide, the number of cases is expected to double to 300 million in less than 25 years. Today, over 5 million people worldwide live with Type 1 diabetes (the more severe form of the disease), of which almost 395,000 are children. If left untreated, long-term complications of the disease can lead to heart failure, blindness, impotence, kidney failure, amputation, and in many cases death.

Over 1.4 million adults are diagnosed with diabetes in the UK, and between 138,000 and 345,000 adults have Type 1 diabetes.

Diabetes prevents the body from properly using energy from food. The condition occurs when the pancreas produces little or no insulin, a hormone required to sustain life, or when the pancreas makes insulin, but the body resists it.

History In The Making

Thank You - Richard Lane

In February Richard Lane came one year on to update us on his progress to date since his transplant operations. he also gave us an insight to the 'Kings Cell Therapy Unit' research project which is soon to be underway. A concert was held in Dulwich College to help raise funds.

Richard Lane, aged 61 previously had problems controlling his type 1 diabetes.  However, through Kings College Hospital, he became the first person in the UK to successfully receive an islet cell transplantation

Thank You - Rolf Smith

In March we held our AGM, our speaker was Rolf Smith until recently a Dietician in the Community Diabetes Team. He challenged the members to take ownership of their own management of their dietary needs - very thought provoking!
